Noema’s new album is a surreal cosmic journey. The music is part of a comprehensive art piece called “ONE” that consists of music, storytelling, remixes, interactive choreography and stage design, theater, and costumes. Sun Ra meets Steve Reich meets Larry Levan - imagine it as a “happening” from the 70s.
Over the past year and half, Noema has written and recorded the music with a small orchestra, created the story, texts, costumes, graphics, videos, choreography, and showed an early experimental version at Garbicz Festival 2022.
In ONE, Noema tells the story of his space explorations, in which he manifests as four Interdimensional Space Voyagers. Because humanity has lost their ability to play and connect with each other, these entities became trapped in our dimension and now put on performances to re-power their portal, so that we can all be interdimensional again! During the performance five actors invite up to 120 people from the audience to join the action.
ONE will be accompanied by a remix album including artists such as Lauer, Kalabrese, Shubostar, Panthera Krause, Mehmet Aslan, Lovefingers, Kelpe and Nicola Noir, which will be released in early 2024.
The form of the music from ONE is loosely based on the minimal music classic “In C” by Terry Riley: It consists of 56 melodic patterns, which are repeated and consecutively played from the first to the last. Every player can move on to the next pattern at their own pace. The piece is approximately 45 minutes long without a break.
As the founder of The Magic Movement, Noema is a pioneer in the electronic and downtempo scene in Europe. As co-producer and A&R he has released iconic records of artists such as Xique-Xique, Carrot Green, Kermesse and discovered artists like Oceanvs Orientalis.
DJing since 1997, and being former resident DJ in the legendary Berlin Club institution Wilde Renate for a decade, Noema has been touring the world just as long with his eclectic and stunning DJ sets, which go up to 10 hours and are indeed the stuff of legends. In his studio work, he has collaborated with electronic music heavy weights like Apparat, Dj Dixon, Daniel Wang and Grammy winners Basement Jaxx. Besides his involvement in electronic music, Noema aka David Benjamin studied classical guitar from 2002-2007 at the highly acclaimed college for music “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin and was teaching for 10 years at the esteemed music school of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. Furthermore David contributed several scores for theater pieces shown at Staatstheater Stuttgart, HAU, Puppentheater Halle and Ballhaus Ost.
